Dettmann: Dettmann LP (Ostgut Ton) Ostgut Ton seem to peddle the sort of humourless but stealthily effective brand of dance music that you'd expect from a label residing in Berlin. With track titles like 'Viscous', 'Irritant' and 'Spitting Blood' (OK, maybe not. I made that last one up), this is the epitome of stripped-down masculine techno. Even his name sounds well hard. But try to look beyond the cliche and here's a long player that doesn't just go for the jugular. The detail is in the decay of rhythm and management of mood. Melodies are sparse and when they do take centre stage, are morose for the most part. I can safely say there isn't a single 'up' moment on this album. Not everything on here works and the uninitiated might see it as more of the same, but treated as a whole this can claim to be the ultimate statement in no-frills functionalism.
